Chill out atop some of Europe's hottest glaciers for summer skiing and boarding

Carving, cruising, mute grabs and mulled wine. Your winter dreams can come true - even in the summertime.

The high-altitude snow fairy is on guard year round keeping it cool at Austria's summer ski and boarding glaciers and covering their perfect snowsure pistes with white stuff. The ice may be thousands of years old but the snow always feels fresh and well groomed.

From jibbers like Mike Douglas and top boarders like Terje Hanonsen, to the likes of famous downhiller Hermann Maier, summer glaciers are a mecca for the world's top athletes and the truly young and groovy. World Cup boarders and skiers from around the world come to Austria to train, learn new tricks, and hang with like-minded types in the mountains.

And after a morning on the slopes, if the sun is high and the snow softens, there are loads of other ice-based treats on offer. Unmissable are guided hikes past blue ice formations or abseiling with an instructor down deep into a crevasse if you dare.

From beginners looking for easy
groomed pistes to the hardcore,
Austria's glaciers are the top
.

The three featured Austrian glaciers are:

One of the country’s most extensive summer glaciers lies less than half an hour from Mayrhofen in the Ziller Valley. Their motto of 'the snow must go on' might be cheezy - but it's also true. An impressive 18km of pistes are open from May onward. Take a spin through the World Cup halfpipe located within its huge fun park.
